On Tuesday September 29 we had a full pack of dogs as we hit the trails at Millstream Park. Our pack included Wilbur the Border Collie / Flatcoat, Petey the American Bulldog, Drift the Border Collie, Nyssa the Husky / Malamute, Taayo the Mexi Mutt and Winston the Aussiedoodle.
This pack was full of excitement. Petey, Drift and Wilbur started running around as soon as they were off leash. It was a little much for Winston to handle at the beginning. He was barking excitedly and wanted to chase after them too. But he wasn’t really paying attention to me, his packmates were far more interesting and delicious. Though he doesn’t seem to notice that they don’t bark at one another and get mouthy. So we kept him on leash for this round. Some days he’s really good and can focus and ‘be gentle’, other days he needs a little to burn off some energy before we can drop the leash.
Our other leash buddy was Taayo. We let him off leash last week and he was a little more independent than we would have liked. He stuck near the group, but wasn’t the best at listening to me. So we’re going to bond a little more before he gets full off leash privileges. Nyssa was her casual self. Wandering in the woods, exploring all the cool nooks and crannies. I often wonder what she finds in her meanderings. Petey, Drift and Wilbur played a few rounds of chase. Drift scored a few extra cuddles, well to be fair they all scored a few pets.
My favourite part though was when we had our break near the end of the walk. Though I love hiking it’s pretty special when all the dogs take a moment to chill, chew some sticks and enjoy life. It was a great hike.
